rusty and chipping...

Happy White Wednesday! The weather has been so beautiful here the last few days so I decided it was time to share my rusty old whites that I haul out each year onto my deck. They were my Mom's and I remember how excited she would get when my Dad would drag them out of the shed each Spring. She would love to look out her kitchen window and see this beauty full of flowers... Do you think the flower pot is too big? I intended to bring home a few things for the bottom shelf from the shop yesterday but I was soooo busy I did not have time! I did manage to grab a pink watering can on the way out that I had for sale on the porch (but it is still in my car). I love the color of these Geraniums...
My husband offered to give this a fresh coat of paint since it was all rusty and chipping ~ I sweetly said thank you but it is supposed to look like that but would love your help on a piece or two or three that I have waiting to go in the shop!! Now the next photo is of a little bistro set that my Mom scored at an estate sale in Wayland. I remember her patiently waiting for my Dad to get home from work so they could go back for it.. Isn't it wonderful! Unfortunately I just might have to take Jim up on his painting offer on this sweet set... I had it out during the party after Jake's confirmation. My brother Dave was enjoying some apps and when he got up to get some more I noticed a faint white lattice design on the back of his black jeans! (Sorry again Dave!) Now tell me all you clever, creative bloggers how can I keep the old rusty and chipping wonderfulness (word?) and still have them be used... Should I lose the wonderful old patina with a fresh coat of paint (then there would be the whole color choice thing) or perhaps spray them with a clear coat to protect the next guest from an unwelcome pattern on their behind? Now my deck is not big so I usually just keep two chairs at the table and stack two to the side... I always enjoy looking at all the beautiful and inviting tables that you all seem to have the knack for setting. That is not an easy task for me but I have put it on my list of things to work on, perhaps over the winter. I did try yesterday because I wanted to show you what I got in the mail last week... Remember when I won the giveaway from Sandi at Wayside Treasures? It was packaged so prettily I hated to open it!! Look at the beautiful garden markers Sandi made... I am sure you have all visited Sandi's beautiful blog but if you haven't yet you are in for a big treat! Just look at some of the eye candy she shares...
She knows that if I lived closer this beauty would be mine!! She is a busy bee with an online shop, Etsy shop and has booth space too creating lovely treasures like these...
She takes the loveliest photos and has used them in her beautiful blog header... Sandi is always entertaining and her blog is a beautiful place to visit, especially on White Wednesday! Thanks again Sandi for my lovely garden markers!! Thank you Kathleen of Faded Charm for hosting my favorite day of the week! Many thanks to you for stopping by today ~ please take some time and go say hi to Sandi and have fun enjoying all the other wonderful whites at Kathleen's!
P.S. I forgot to tell you that Sandi is featured in the latest issue of Porch Magazine ~ take a peek here to read all about it!!

Your white things are just beautiful and so are your treasures from Sandi ~
I am not sure about the painting ~ it seems like some kind of clear coat would be good because then they would still have that wonderful rusty look ~

I love your trolley and you white table setting. I think that a coat of clear sealer would be a good idea on the furniture as it looks lovely the way it is. Congratulations on your win you're a very lucky gal! xx

Great cart ~ I have one in black that I am always trying out new things on. Why are we never satisfied with our vignettes ~ occupational hazard I guess. I do love those garden markers and Sandi's blog is agreeably quite perfect. I would push a little old lady off that bike and grab it, if I had the chance;)

I love your white outdoor furniture and the plant stand. I can understand why you get excited pulling them out to use each year. I'm not a paint expert but I would think that a clear coat would keep your shabby look but help protect those sitting on it from getting "lattice butt" :-)
Have a great day.

Love this posting Sandi! Isn't it so fun to begin decorating our porches and decks? That's my favorite time to decorate (besides Christmas of course) Regarding your chairs...I purchased some vintage chippy, rusty iron chairs a couple years ago that the previous owner had sprayed with some kind of sealer. This has kept the chairs perfect, with no further rusting. I do only use them indoors however. I'll try to post some close ups of the chairs later. I had to chuckle at your husband's desire to paint away the rust for you. My husband would have thought the same.
Happy Spring to you and yours!

Hi Sandi,

No, I don't think the pot is too big - the geranium fills the space quite nicely, don't you think? I visited your Etsy store and especially admire your foot long picture and had to smile, as I am showing a yard long on my White Wednesday post - we have similar likes!

I love that some of your furniture on your deck belonged to you Mom! I've still got some goofy outdoor stuff in my yard that belonged to my parents. I think it keeps our folks close to our hearts when we see these things. Happy "WW"!

Take care, Sue

I simply love your little table and chairs and the cute cart.I have a larger table and chairs similar to yours it was dark green and I just painted it red.At first I didn't know if I liked it but it has kinda grown on me I can live with it now.I covered the seats in red and white stripe and the place mats I put on the table are the same stripe as the seats on one side and red with white polka dots on the other.I also love your little plant markers you won so cute I need to order me some of those.Well thanks for sharing and have a great day.

Sandi I love your rusty, chippy wonderfulness! I usally just spray a matte clear coat finish on my rusty stuff. I love having the rust, but not the stains. You really won a great package from Sandi...don't you just love her? She is sooo talented and creative. Always inspiring me to do more.

Such wonderful family heirlooms you have there! I absolutely adore that little cart, and the bistro set. The same thing happened with a set of old garden furniture that I have. A friend ended up with that same lattice effect on her clothes. I was mortified! Since then I've sprayed it all with a clear coat of sealer, and it's been fine!
Happy White Wednesday!

Oh I just love the white bistro set. I was told to put poliurithan on my rusty white to protect them. It does come in a spray can. Good luck, I haven't tried yet.

Loving all your white chippies today and the bike is too cool. I know what you mean about the corks. It's taken me a while, but my jar is full now and I can honestly say I took part in every one....hahaha.

Take care,

Kathleen

Hi Sandi,
I just recently heard about the idea to spray lacquer outdoor metal items. I think it is great, you get to keep them from getting rustier and you get to keep the patina as well. So that is what I would do to the table set if it were mine.
