jane muffet and peter and wendy...

Well, it has been raining since Sunday and probably will be right through tomorrow! I guess I should be happy ~ the rain has brought cooler temperatures. The last few weeks working at the shop on Tuesdays has been so hot and humid. I am looking forward to fluffing my space today and not feel like I am melting! I found some wonderful old books this weekend. Some are headed for my Etsy shop and some for my booth... John Martin's Big Book No. 10 published in 1926... is full of lessons for little ones, sweet stories as well as a bit of history too...
Did you know Miss Muffet's first name was Jane?!

Wonderful old story books...
They are in great condition for vintage books. They all belonged to "Corinne" who wrote her name inside each one. I love this cover... I noticed that in addition to the contents page of a book there would be a list of illustrations page too. As I browse through this beauty I don't know if I can part with it! How about a book with bedtime stories, you know before the Sand-man comes... After reading the Foreword it made me wonder if the stories are for bed time or not... I did pick up 19 books from The Bedtime Story Books collection. There were 20 in all... I am going to save these for my booth ~ the colors will be great for a Halloween display I am working on (and am very excited about)! This next book is probably in the worst shape with the hard cover coming loose. However the illustrations are so sweet...
Great as is or for altered art projects by all you creative ones out there! Now, this was the first book I picked... I quickly grabbed it for the colors ~ thought it would be perfect for a holiday vignette. Then I took a closer look...Sigh..."Peter and Wendy", first edition from 1911. Love the first illustration... I usually use Ebay and Etsy to do a little homework on the treasures I find. I nearly fell off my chair when I looked this one up on Ebay! I only paid 50 cents for each book!! Well, I am off to get a few things ready to take to the shop. I will be listing a few new things in my Etsy shop this week too. Thank you for taking time to visit and browse through these wonderful old books with me today. I am joining Linda over at Coastal Charm for Nifty Thrifty Tuesday. I think I did some nifty thrifting, don't you?!

What great treasures. Old book art is so sweet. I was on Marthas Vineyard a few years ago and picked up an entire set of the "Young Readers" series ~ what illustrations!

Wow! You got those books for a steal. I bought some nice ones this summer too but paid between $1 and $3 each.

I wish it would rain here but when it does, everything leaks. These concrete buildings built on sand are settling year after year and you don't know where there's a problem until you get rain.

We won't have cooler temps for months. Have a great rest of the week. :) Tammy

Oh my gosh Sandi, I'm wiping the drool off my mouth! Those books are gorgeous! I really want to start collecting some vintage books, I don't have any. I've been feeling so sad all week about not having my original Milly Molly Mandy bookset, I wish I hadn't let any of that stuff go to storage:( But I can't dwell on what I can't change so I'm going to try and re-build a book collection!

Have fun fluffing your space today and please send me some rain!!!!

Sandi,
Love those books! I'm sure your display will be as sweet as they come. I had to laugh when I saw the "Sandman" book and what you said about it. As a child, I was always afraid of the Sandman (I thought he lived under my bed). To this day, I can't sleep with any of my limbs hanging over the side of the bed. I guess so the Sandman can't pull me under it ...LOL! Dick and Jane brings back such nice memories of learning to read in my youth...Dick, Jane, and the trusty "Spot"
Anyway, can't wait to see the fluffing of your space and what you did with the sweet little books.
Be blessed,
Karen

My son loved the Burgess stories -- all those animals and their adventures. And that Peter and Wendy -- oh my! I don't think I could give that up.

I just adore old books! They are the first things I look for in thrift stores and antique shops. I use old books in all my photos on my blog. I'd love to come across a Dick and Jane book! I remember those old gems! Thanks for stopping by today.

Hi Sandi! My mother used to be a librarian at our local library around the corner from our house. I basically grew up there. She taught us kids how important books were and to treat them with care and respect. So seeing your salvaged books brought back some wonderful memories for me. Beautiful! And thank you! :)

You found some very nice books. I love old books written in the 40's. The stories are so simple. Maybe I'm dating myself but I remember the Dick and Jane books like it was yesterday, which it wasn't!
