to paint or not to paint...

That is the question.

I have a wonderful old hutch that was my Mom's...
It nests right outside my studio so I see it everyday...
I change out the displays for the seasons.  Right now it is wearing simple summer whites...
I think it will look beautiful painted white.  I know it will be a lot of work though so I guess that is why I have not done it yet.  Now my pictures are a bit dark (the lighting downstairs is not the best) but the beadboard on the back will look much better white...
So my friends, answer me this...
To paint or not to paint...
...that is the question.

I am joining the lovely Debra over at Common Ground for Vintage Inspiration Friday.  Did you hear that she is joining in on the Summer Blockg Party hosted by the ladies from At The Picket Fence...
Should be lots of fun!!

Thank you for visiting today and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

  2. Do what your heart tells you.
I personally would paint it, but I paint over all dark wood furniture because I have a paint addiction.

  3. I will probably be in the minority here, but I say leave it as it is. I think it's great! But it all depends on how you decorate your home. If you prefer a mostly white home, then go for it. If you like mixing darks amongst your cottage whites, then leave it.

  4. Oh...this is a hard one for me. I do think the piece would look wonderful painted white but I also love the contrast of the white ironstone pieces against the wood. So see....I'm not one bit of help :)
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  6. It's pretty the way that it is, but I'd probably paint it :)

  8. I love that cabinet, but it doesn't seem quite you without a coat of paint. But, then again, I would have a hard time painting it too because it is soooo gorgeous.

  9. Hi Sandi! Thanks so much for the shout out for the blog party!! The hutch is gorgeous and amazing. I think most things look better painted white, and I know this will be beautiful. Thanks for joining in for the party,
    xoxo Debra

  10. Hi Sandi

Im on board for the paint as well. I know that you can purchase cover stain block at any paint store so you can skip the sanding part. Also have you seen the chalk paint by Anne Sloan its amazing stuff I have seen how fast and the results are unbelievable no sanding or priming required.

    Have a great weekend

you're asking the girl that runs around with a paint brush in her hand and considers it her wardrobe staple?!

I say... follow your heart. Either way your Mom is proud that you have it and love it...

turquoise is always fun! cherry red... sunshine yellow... black! ;-D

  12. You know me Sandi. I say PAINT, PAINT, PAINT. I would LOVE to paint my hutch and buffet, but I have to talk hubby into it first!
    :(

  13. I too am probably in the minority, but I would leave it as it is. Although, if you really, really would enjoy it better painted white, then by all means do it. Your heart must tell you what to do and you will be happy. It's beautiful either way!

  14. well...let me add my 2 cents. This is my rule: if it is a family heirloom or a treasure from someone I know personally, I DON'T paint it....If I have no connection to it what-so-ever, then out comes the spray can!

  17. Hi Sandi, the piece is absolutely beautiful! I would paint it white and the inside back of the piece I would paint a really pale gray color. That way your white pieces will really pop against the gray color.
    Hope this helps.
Have a beautiful weekend my friend.
    Sincerely,
    Melinda

  18. I'm no help. I have the same problem with a lot of furniture. I like it both ways BUT I don't paint in general because of the work. It would look fab tho! It's beautiful!

  19. Paint it! It will be so worth it! You will see the vintage lines, the drawer pulls will stand out and the beadboard will pop!

  20. Oh, that is a tough decision. But no matter what you choose, I'm sure your Mom would appreciate whichever way makes you the happiest!
It's a lovely hutch, and looks great with your summer whites, Sandi.
Thanks for your super-nice comment on my dining room post. I think my favorite photo is the one of the galvanized watering can I got from you in April. :)
    Take care, Susan

  21. I would paint it, but I have a hard time painting over something with sentimental value though. So if it's just the work that it would take, maybe the chalk paint everyone is talking about would be the way to go. It has been said that you don't have to prime to use it, sounds like my kind of paint! But if you haven't painted it because it was your moms, well then, that's another story... t.xoxoxoox

  22. I say also......follow your heart, but it screams PAINT ME!!!! It took me a while to paint a farm table that came from my grandfathers farm.....but, I was happy when it was done!! Pam

  23. Paint! I would use that awesome Annie Sloan chalk paint that everyone is raving about now - and then distress it when you get done! It would bring out the hutch's beautiful lines, Sandi! :)

  24. Hmmmmm, I don't know Sandi! It looks like such a solid and lovely piece..I watch too much Antique Roadshow so I would veer on the side of Don't paint it. I love white but dark adds such a warmth and your white dishes will show up more! But, I also know that when I hum and haaaa about painting something I always end up painting it!~

  25. Well, as much as I love painted furniture I would probably not paint that particular piece because it was my Moms and had a history to it. But...if that doesn't bother you then I say-paint away. How about leaving the top of the bottom part polished wood and painting the rest? That would give it a different look..with the dark polished top...not the whole top part-just the "table top" part. Hugs-Diana

  26. I think you'll fall totally in looove with your Mom's gorgeous hutch all over again, as soon as it goes WHITE!!! I can hardly wait to see it's reveal! Thanks for visiting my blog and your sweet comment! Debbie @ Cottage Hann~Me~Downs

  27. If it is wood, not veneer, and if the finish is in good shape, I would clean it and wax it with beeswax and enjoy it as is. If not, then paint it.

  28. I would paint it to reinvent it for yourself yet still retain the memories you have of it. I think if you want to paint it but are holding back because it was your Mom's, you should go with what you really want to do with it. I tried that chalk paint today for the first time and I have to say that I'm pretty pleased with my project. No priming and no sanding. Just in case you decide to paint!

  29. I can see why you hesitate to paint it, because it is beautiful as it is... but i think it would be wonderful painted white, and as Melinda said, paint the interior a pale gray.

  30. Ok I would say to paint it but I seem to paint everything.
I have a paint brush always soaking in water.....

  32. I'd also be trying to decide what to do. I have a large TV cabinet that's pine and has yellowed over the years. I want to paint it, but I just don't have the time right now, it's also huge and heavy. So, I say "paint it." I think the detail will pop with a fresh coat of paint.

  33. Beautiful piece either way, but I'd say get out the paint and go for it!

  34. What a beautiful hutch! I say paint, but I paint everything so I agree with some of the comments here and do what your heart says. Either way, it is gorgeous. :)

  35. That will be gorgeous painted white, if that is what you really want, then you should do it.
I have one that I shall do this summer sometime.
